Over the last week the senior men’s & ladies cup have seen some tremendous matches as Several teams competed for the much sought after cup winners slot in Europe. In the ladies competition Collegians Natwest Veterans surprised everyone by drawing their 2 qualifying matches. This meant that in the final Qualifying game Hawks had to beat Eagle Ladies for a place in the final. Hawks were actually 2-0 up at Some point of the match but the strong Eagle’s squad pressed hard and managed to turn the match around for a 3-2 win, thus securing a place in the final. Hawks defeat meant that the other team qualifying for the final Was the unfancied Collegian Natwest Ladies. The final was a more one sided affair with Eagle Ladies proving too strong winning 3 – 0 and once again stamping their authority on the competition. Nevertheless a big pat on the back for the Collegian ladies who have no doubt ended the season on a high.
The men’s competition was just as exciting with Grammarians wanting to finish the season unbeaten and Eagles & Gib HT competing for a place in the final and Europe next year. The 1st match saw Eagles fielding their strongest side For the first time this season and earning a 3 – 3 draw against a very young Grammarians side. The next day saw Eagles completely demolish Gib HT 6 -1 in a very one sided affair. This meant that Gib HT had to beat Grammarians the Next day to get to the final, a daunting task without doubt. On Monday afternoon Grammarians met Gib HT and the match was in fact another hard fought event. Both teams fielded below strength sides but the end to end action was a joy to watch. Grammarians won 1 – 0 thanks to a well taken goal by young Eric Casciaro and this meant they would play Eagles in the Final. The men’s final was again a joy to watch. Eagles had the lion’s share of the 1st half possession but Grammarians finesse From set pieces and their superior fitness earned them a well deserved match, the final score 2 – 1 to Grammarians.
Grammarians (Men) and Eagles (Ladies) will be representing Gibraltar as League Champions in Europe next year, after having won the mens and ladies senior divisions quite comfortably. A special mention for their coaches, Eric Abudarham & Johnny Villa respectively, whose commitment and hard work have paid off.
The men’s second division was won by the Grammarians Reserves who managed to win every single game of the season. The Eagles ladies were once again too powerful for the other teams and cemented their position as Gibraltar’s top ladies team. Well done Eagles. Grammarians also deserve a special mention as they have totally dominated men’s hockey during the whole of the season with a whole new crop of faces amongst their more established senior players . Well done Grammarians.
The Ladies Senior Cup Competition is well under way. Collegians Natwest have given themselves a real chance of qualifying for the final and European competition next year by drawing against Hawks and Eagle Ladies. This weekend sees the crunch game between Eagle Ladies & Hawks, with all to play for. The scenario is also set for the men’s cup competition with Gib Ht and Eagles facing each other on Sunday morning at 10.15am with a place in Europe also up for grabs.
